Attracted by the favourable regulatory framework
In a surprise announcement, Facebook has said that it will move its headquarters to Mars. It has stated that the regulatory framework will make it easier to operate.
Analysts have said that the immediate reason appears to be the European General Data Protection Regulation which comes into force on May 25. This legislation extends European data protection rules to all foreign companies operating in the EU. However, it does not extend off-planet, as there are no trade agreements with Mars.
Facebook will move all data it holds on anyone anywhere in the world, to Mars.
Elon Musk has deplored the move and has said he wants to create a sanctuary for humanity, not a privacy wild west.
